This quiz will help you learn about risk factors for dementia that you may have in your life. These risk factors can raise—or lower—your risk of long-term cognitive decline—including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Scientists often think about the risk of dementia as being based on “brain reserve.” Your brain reserve is a measure of your overall brain health and resilience.
Brain reserve is built—and lost—over your entire life, from birth to today. Your brain reserve depends on some things that are under your control—like how you use your brain, your exercise and diet, and your stress, sleep, and social networks; and some things that are outside of your control—like your genetics, your childhood experiences, your general health, and your age.
Having a higher brain reserve means you have a lower risk of dementia—your higher brain reserve acts as a cushion against the onset of dementia. And having a lower brain reserve means you have a higher risk of dementia—you may not have quite as much protection against the onset of dementia.
The good news is that whatever your brain reserve is today, you can maintain and improve it—and improve your brain health and cognitive function—with brain healthy activities.
